toilets, but he said to me straight, 'That would be a death sentence, Jim. If we get back to England without the Russian's drugs, we'll be dead within a week. Forget about it, kid. It's too late to turn back.' Grim as it was, I knew Paul was right.

We walked towards check-in, and thought the whole world must know what we were up to: we were panicking so much, it was impossible to act cool.

Safely through that queue, we headed towards passport control, and suddenly my heart froze. 'Paul! Look, there's a sniffer dog by the gate!' Time seemed to stand still and my legs almost gave way.

As we handed our passports to the official, we had to stand right next to the dog. I swear it looked up right into my eyes. I thought we were done for, but it just looked away and we were told, 'OK, you can go through.'

Yes! Bloody hell, we didn't get nicked! Maybe it was true what the Russian had said, that all the guards had been paid to turn a blind eye to us?

I felt on top of the world at that moment. I thought we'd made it.
